“Christmas is a time when you get homesick- even when you’re home.” -Carol Nelson

When happening across this quote, the following- yes, another quote- immediately sprang to mind:

“You know that point in your life when you realize the house you grew up in isn’t really your home anymore? All of a sudden even though you have some place where you put your sh!t, that idea of home is gone. You feel like you can never get it back. It’s like you feel homesick for a place that doesn’t even exist. Maybe it’s like this rite of passage, you know. You won’t ever have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start, it’s like a cycle or something. I don’t know, but I miss the idea of it, you know. Maybe that’s all family really is. A group of people that miss the same imaginary place.” -Garden State


May thankfully say that my home always feels like home, but that may be attributed to a sense seemingly found residing within that follows to most anywhere I go, whether “home,” or not.

That said, the line about family really just being “a group of people that miss the same imaginary place” still manages to resonate deeply, and upon first hearing it, I felt a little more understood, a bit more defined, and relieved even that I may not be the only one left wondering where the home of long ago went.

Now with Christmas, comes the homesickness quoted above and it’s all that can be done to keep in mind that the presence of such a feeling is all part of the beauty found in that called childhood.
